01 — Industry Challenge

Why is fire protection different in this industry?

Warehouse and logistics facilities require an engineering approach different from standard buildings because of their wide-span roof structures, high-rack stacking, and continuous vehicle/forklift traffic. In areas where storage height exceeds 6 meters, ESFR sprinklers are preferred because they eliminate the need for additional in-rack sprinklers; with high flow capacity, these systems aim to suppress the fire at an early stage. Combustible stock such as packaging materials, cardboard, and plastic increases the fire load; stacking arrangement and rack spacing are the key inputs to the hydraulic calculation. In facilities located on large parcels, the outdoor fire hydrant network must be placed at points suited to forklift and truck traffic and must operate in sync with the indoor sprinkler and detection systems. Because loading and unloading operations never stop, installation and commissioning are planned by dividing the warehouse into sections so that operations are not interrupted. For campus-type logistics sites, the ability to connect future warehouse blocks to the same hydraulic infrastructure is also evaluated separately at the design stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Warehousing & Logistics: frequently asked questions

Which systems are mandatory in warehouse and logistics facilities?

Fire hose cabinets are mandatory in warehouse buildings with a total usable area above 1,000 m², and a fire hydrant network is mandatory in facilities with an enclosed area above 5,000 m². In high-rack storage areas, a sprinkler system may also be required depending on the risk class.

When are ESFR sprinklers needed?

In areas where storage height exceeds 6 meters, ESFR (Early Suppression Fast Response) sprinklers eliminate the need for in-rack sprinklers and, with high flow capacity, suppress the fire at an early stage.

Where are fire hydrant lines placed in a warehouse yard?

Fire hydrant lines are laid underground in HDPE pipe at a depth of 80–100 cm, and hydrants are positioned 5–15 m from the building at intervals determined by the hazard class (high risk 50 m, medium risk 125 m, low risk 150 m). Forklift and truck traffic is taken into account in this planning.

Can installation be done while warehouse loading/unloading continues?

Yes. Installation is planned by dividing the warehouse into sections; actively used sections are protected while critical lines are prioritized, and commissioning is carried out so that operations are not interrupted.

If a warehouse expansion is planned, can the system be designed for it?

The hydraulic calculation is based on the current storage layout; for campuses that will grow, leaving capacity margin in pump and water tank sizing can be evaluated separately at the design stage.
