01 — Industry Challenge

Why is fire protection different in this industry?

Furniture, wood, and foam manufacturing carries one of the most complex risk profiles for fire safety. When wood dust and shavings are suspended in the air, they create a fast-burning, heavily smoky environment; paint and varnish booths fall into a separate hazard class because of solvent vapor; and foam raw material stocks lead to very rapid flame spread. Because Kayseri is one of Türkiye's major furniture manufacturing centers, these facilities typically operate in large production areas and high-rack raw material warehouses. A single suppression approach cannot cover this variety: the production line, paint booth, foam warehouse, and raw material yard each require a different hazard class calculation. A non-standard system causes problems both at fire department approval and in insurance inspections. For this reason, engineering design in the furniture and wood sector proceeds by sizing each section separately according to its own risk profile rather than with a single general calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Furniture & Wood: frequently asked questions

Which areas in furniture factories are subject to fire protection systems?

The production line, raw material/foam warehouses, paint booths, and drying ovens are evaluated according to risk class. Under BYKHY (Turkish Fire Protection Regulation), fire hose cabinets are mandatory in manufacturing and warehouse buildings with a total usable area above 1,000 m², and a fire hydrant network is mandatory in facilities with an enclosed area above 5,000 m²; sprinklers or a detection system may also be required in sections with a high fire load.

How do wood dust and shavings accumulation affect the choice of suppression system?

When wood dust is suspended in the air, it creates a fast-burning, heavily smoky fire environment. For this reason, high-flow sprinkler designs and early-warning detection systems are preferred on production lines; in enclosed volumes with heavy dust accumulation, equipment selection is calculated separately according to hazard class.

Is a special approach needed for foam raw material warehouses?

Yes. Foam materials spread flame rapidly and produce heavy smoke; these stock areas are evaluated in a separate hazard class and the sprinkler design is sized accordingly. ESFR sprinklers may be preferred in areas where storage height exceeds 6 meters.

Are paint and varnish booths protected with standard sprinklers?

Paint and varnish booths carry a different fire risk because of solvent vapor. A suppression approach and detection system suited to the booth type and ventilation layout are designed separately for these sections.

Is installation possible without production downtime?

With a planned project schedule, installation is carried out in sections. The production line does not need to stop entirely; critical sections are prioritized and commissioning is coordinated with shift planning.
