Our fire protection approach on the Arkopa project
Raw material yards where wood and wood-based panels are stored are among the most critical areas of the facility in terms of fire load, due to their large surface area and stack height. A fire starting in the raw material warehouse can feed on the air gaps between stacks, grow quickly, and reach the production line. Bringing raw material storage areas under automatic suppression is therefore considered standard practice in the wood sector.
At the Arkopa Ahşap facilities, automatic suppression and manual response points were distributed across the whole site, raw material warehouse included. Outdoor safety is supported by the hydrant network, and fire water demand is met by a pump set and storage system. Smoke control, early warning, and safe evacuation solutions are part of the protection chain running from the raw material warehouse to the production area.
Keeping stack layout in raw material warehouses compatible with the sprinkler coverage area is a subject of the periodic inspections under the maintenance contract. In projects approved by the fire department, the distance between sprinkler heads and stacks should be checked regularly.
